National Junior Racing Series – Round 1 Recap
The opening event in the inaugural National Junior Racing series attracted over 200 riders from across Australia take on the three stages Peel Junior Tour in the Canary Wharf Criterium Circuit, Borrego Springs Kermesse Circuit and finally the Hilly Pienza Road Racecourse.
Round 1 Category Recaps
JM15 Race
Benjamin Meakin (Ballarat Sebastapol Cycling Club, VIC) took home the General Classification after placing second in the crit, fourth in the first road race and second in the hilly road race. Luke Richard (Gold Coast CC, QLD) took the stage 2 win on his way to taking second in the General Classification. Zane Fisher (SXCC, NSW) took line honours in the criterium and followed up with third-place finish in stage 2 before taking 3rd in the General Classification.
Niel van Nikerk (Mount Gambier, SA) showed his form in the lead to series event #2 by powering away from the field on the final lap of the Pienza stage.
JW15 Race
Lauren Bates (Canberra Cycling Club, ACT) dominated the tour winning two stages (Canary Wharf & Pienza). Bates was followed closely all day by Georgia Gardiner (Jindabyne Cycling Club, NSW) winning the Borrego Springs stage and placing second on the other two stages. Isabelle Russell (Dubbo CC, NSW) was a consistent performer throughout the Tour finishing with two third-place finishes (Canary Wharf and Pienza) and a 5th (Borrego Springs)
JM17 Race
Hamish McKenzie (Northern Districts CC, WAS) was the class of the field taking one stage victory (Borrego Springs) and two second place finishes (Canary Wharf and Pienza). Montgomery Moore (Port Macquarie Cycling Club, NSW) and Campbell Palmer (City of Burney, TAS).
Ryan Britten (Ilawarra CC, NSW) showed class by winning two stages (Canary Wharf and Borrego Springs) but was ineligible for the GC.
JW17 Race
In one of the most thrilling Tours Emily Wiggins (Albany Cycling Club, WA) won by 1 point over Lucinda Stewart (Carengie Caulfield Cycling Club, VIC) after winning the Borrego Springs stage and placing second and third on the other stages. Stewart showed impressive form winning both the Carnary Wharf and Pienza stages. Ruby McLean (Bendigo & District CC, VIC) rounded out the podium for the General Classification after taking second on stage two.
JM19 Race
Home club rider Callum Milne (Peel District Cycling Club, WA) was too strong for the field after taking the win at Canary Wharf and second at the Pienza stage. Powered by a win on the Borrego Springs stage Liam Johnston (Laucesonton Cycling Club, TAS) was able to take second in the General Classification.
Despite power outage issues on the final stage by other riders, Alex Bogna (Mackay Cycling Club, QLD) road to victory at the Pienza stage to round out the General Classification podium.
JW19 Race
Queensland riders went 1-2-3 in the JW19 races with Stephanie Corset (Townsville Cycling Club, QLD) the class of the field winning two stages (Carnary Wharf and Pienza). Lilliana McLennan (Balmoral Cycling Club, QLD) and Briana McDonald (Townsville Cycling Club, QLD) rounded out the podium. McLennan solidified her second place on GC with a win on stage 2 (Borrego Springs).

Round Two of the National Junior Racing Series will take place on the Pienza course in Italy. Located in Tuscany, Italy, Pienza was once the home of Pope Puis II and is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
The area is a common destination for cyclists and it is one of the best examples of a Renaissance town in Italy. There is no doubt, the Italian countryside and Pienza are beautiful. The route is perfect for any type of rider, especially those looking to have some fun on a punchy course.
Racing on Pienza will be hard (would you expect anything else) and is likely to be decided on the climb.
